Dear TSMS Families,
I hope that you have all had a great start to the summer! I would like to thank all of you for partnering with us to ensure that your children are happy, productive, and prepared for whatever lies ahead. You are key to the success of TSMS.
As some of you are probably aware, TSMS was founded upon the idea that a diverse community is essential to a healthy and productive learning experience. Underpinning this view is the belief that learners learn most when surrounded by people who bring different perspectives on the world. If you have been following recent conversations about diversity in the NYC DOE, you will understand that being able to cultivate and maintain a diverse student body in this city is a remarkable achievement in itself. However, the awful rarity of unsegregated schools does not change the fact that diversity alone is not enough! It is my belief that, as a community, we are ready to move beyond diversity to ensure equity for all of our students.
For those of you who may not know what we mean by equity in the education world, equity is the idea that there are factors in some students’ lives, such as poverty or institutionalized racism, that require schools to allocate additional resources to ensure that everyone has equal access to the benefits and opportunities that education can provide. Until now, diversity has been the lens that has shaped much of what we have achieved at TSMS and equity will serve the same purpose but hopefully with an even deeper result. We have achieved something remarkable already and I believe in our ability to take this next crucial step. Our search for equity within an inequitable system is not an initiative, it is a lens that will continually guide us as we try to better serve the needs of every child in our community.
